Caring moments...they don't have to be so sappy!

We were discussing memorable moments today at work at Deb Friedman shared a super funny moment she had with Anne Becker and an adolescent patient who was a staple here a few years ago. This certain patient needed a lab that required a finger poke. Anne diligently poked but grew frustrated because it was clotting off before she had the amount she needed for the sample. After several attempts she asked Deb to come in and help her. Deb offered her new grad expertise and also began to poke away with very little results. On one of their trips back to the med room for more lancets someone gave them the helpful tip of using a blue lancet instead of the tiny purple one (that was barely breaking the skin!). They had a good laugh about that one and fortunately the patient was a great sport and laughed about it too. Her story reminded me of a funny moment I shared recently with a teenaged patient. I went into his room with my student, it was her first day on heme/onc.  I was walking the student through the process of administering an IV medication, whispering because the patient was sleeping, when suddenly the patient's eyes peeked open and he said, "Aren't you going to tell her to scrub my dirty hub?" We all burst into laughter. The rest of the day he kept us on our toes with his awesome sense of humor, even dancing and singing along to the "I'm sexy and I know it" song. It was a day I drove home thanking God for the opportunity to do the job that I do. What are some of your most funny memories with patients?
